In December 2001 my mother celebrated her 7th anniversary of being cancer free.
Early the next year I heard the words “Dragonboat” and “Survivor” together for the first time. The following fall I was so proud of all that she and her team were accomplishing that I made the very first silver paddle for my mother.
This year in the spring, while away at school my mom came down to visit out of the blue. Breast Cancer, not the same as before, but a new site. While I was very distressed at first, I realized that this was not like the first time in a very special way. I learned that while I was not able to come back home for very long, she already had a support team, a whole crew of women and their families with her.
